As you may or may not know I've recently been illustrating vintage fashion for the Cherry Closet Boutique, and here are some of the prints I'm going to be selling at the What Alice Found shop in Boscombe.

I'm also working on opening an etsy shop, it's about time really! So I will be selling the prints there too. (I'm currently working on some christmas cards, which will be available to buy soon)

James' Paradise - New Work for October Private View

As you may know I'm exhibiting a few of my original paintings, and prints at Debut Contemporary in London, and here is my newest work which will be on show at the October Private View!

It has taken me three weeks to complete and is A1 in size. I created the paradise on the basis of the description James gave me, and this is the result.

To make the picture I studied a lot of plants and flowers from the botanical gardens, as well as including strata, and rocks that I had photographed from the south coast.

I am really happy I am able to show you all. I will be making it into prints if anyone is interested.

Hello! It's been a while since I updated, and that's because I've been working a few weeks now on a new painting, and a commission, as well as getting ready for my private view at Debut Contemporary, Notting Hill (need to post up pictures from the night!)

But I've finally finished my A1 painting, and here's a sneak peek for you all to have a gander at, I'm going to get a high quality scan done so I will be revealing it soon, and making it into prints if anyone is interested.

BRINK London Exhibition

I've just got back from BRINK, our end of year Bournemouth Illustration Show which was held at Free Range, at the Old Truman Brewery. I exhibited three A1 original drawings from my major project.

It was a great week, and I learnt so much about putting on an exhibition, let's hope there's more to come!

Paradise Final Illustrations

Here are my final illustrations for my paradise project, the final project of my degree.

These are all hand-drawn and painted, at A1 size.

I will be exhibiting all of these at my Degree Show in Bournemouth for a week commencing the 23rd of May.

As well as Bournemouth, I will be exhibiting them in London at the BRINK show, as part of Free Range at the Truman Brewery, Brick Lane between the 7th-11th of July!

Amelia's Compendium of Fashion Illustration Book Launch

So on Friday I was lucky enough to go to Amelia's Launch Party for the book at 123 Bethnal Green. Here is me with my plus one for the night, my lovely boyfriend James.

The venue was tucked behind a vintage shop, and the party was held on several floors, with the band 6 Day Riot playing on the upper floor, and a DJ set from the Pipettes, and later on Will from the Mystery Jets.

The bottom floor was where I got this gorgeous goody bag, with customised moleskine and tatty devine necklace with the amelia logo... absolutely love the tote too!

And Here's the cake by Lily Vanilli.. it tasted and looked amazing, with the most delicious icing ever..

I had a great time meeting the designers and other illustrators who have also been published in the book, and who I also follow on Twitter. It was so great to finally meet them in person!

If you read my earlier blog posts you will know that I won Amelia's Magazine's Open Brief Competition as one of the Illustrators to design a fashion collection and be featured in her latest book.

I finally got my copy of it over Christmas, a couple of days before in fact, and what a great present!

It was the same time last year that I was opening my Amelia's Anthology of Illustration, so to be actually in this installment is a little surreal!

I'm very happy with my pages, I think they turned out really well, all the pages are jam-packed full of colour and pattern. Especially loving the layouts Amelia has created, she's done such a great job!

Gulf of Mexico Endangered Species

So after 10 weeks work this is my final piece for my endangered species project. It's been great drawing scientific illustration, something I was curious to explore as I loved the intricacy and detailing. I enjoyed distorting this and bringing a contemporary twist to it.

I made sure I used layers to make it look like a pool that you could look into, with the piece's outer layer in the shape of the gulf of mexico. Inside the pool are layers of coral, water and the animals that reside there. The various animals are the endangered species which are decaying from the oil spill.

I've really loved getting into papercuts again, and using mixed media, it's been a great project to explore!

Silent Auction

So with the run up to christmas we are holding a silent auction at university. It's happening tomorrow, and this is the print I've submitted. It's of a blue throated Mackaw, and I'm hoping he goes to a good home!

Hello, I've got lots to show you, but here's just a selection for the moment.

I have been exploring an authorial project, which started with an article in the new scientist about endangered species in South America.

This focused particularly on species threatened by human intervention.

I developed the project into the animals affected in the oil spill disaster that happened in the Gulf of Mexico. I have been conveying decay, but wanted the images to be eery and beautiful..

A recipe for.. knitting a penguin jumper

As it states, this is a 'how to' for knitting a penguin jumper.. loving festive knitwear at the moment.

It's being published in a zine, "A recipe for.." that we produced to raise money for our end of year show. So it should hopefully be on sale soon. Everyone from my course did a different recipe, unconventional ones to make for interesting illustrations!

I love how delicate they are, it gave me a lot of breadth to create something detailed and pretty. I'm loving the insect jewellery, wouldn't mind some of that myself! Couldn't bring myself to draw the spiders though..

Inkygoodness - Play Exhibition

I've had a busy, but fun week.

I've been helping out at the Inkygoodness 'Play' Exhibition at the East Gallery on Brick Lane, London.

I've really liked this collective for a while as I saw their exhibition last year at the Birmingham Custard Factory and thought they were amazing.

I've met so many talented illustrators, it's very inspiring indeed. Most of which I had already heard of, so it was great to meet them in person.

I learnt about hanging the show, pricing up the artwork and what it takes to run a collective like inkygoodness.

Amelia's Magazine - La Shark Interview

I've been illustrating for Amelia's magazine again - It's so great to be contributing to a magazine I've admired for a few years now :)

I Illustrated the interview with La Shark's lead singer, Samuel Geronimo Deschamps. La Shark are a quirky funk band, or 'freak pop,' phrased by Aimee O'Neill. The band reminded me on first listen of Adam and the Ants, and with their dress code considered I think this is evident; which I totally approve of, it was great fun to work with!

Rob Ryan Work Experience

A couple of weeks ago I had a day in the life of Rob Ryan. I had been looking forward to it very much, especially as he is an Illustrator I look up to in terms of craft and practice - his work is so beautiful! Even more so first hand.
I was introduced to both his studios, his main studio where the cut-outs happen and the print studio. Everywhere was littered with prints and rob ryan branded mugs, plates, sellotape, kitchen tiles.. it was so tiny but bursting with life.

I had such a fun day, cutting out from one of his latest paper cuts, and making badges for his shop marking his Ryantown 2 year anniversary, as well as running errands. It was so exciting to witness his London Studio first-hand, the ins and outs of what it was like to be an Illustrator.

I've had a lot of birthdays recently in my calendar and I always love making birthday cards, here are a couple!
I seem to be collecting a lot of wrapping paper and hoarding offcuts, I now have boxes full of paper, maybe it's getting out of hand!

Chaos Theory Animation

I have finally completed my animation for the Divergence brief.
2/3 weeks of stop motion and it is finally over, it's been a steep learning curve, as I've learnt a lot from after effects, making sure the tripod is set up correctly, lighting etc all had to be considered. As well as the actual medium I was using. The origami paper was very fun to work with, especially with the vibrant colours! It was just a little time consuming creating all the different characters/scenes but I don't mind at all, I think it's been fun! :)

I think being cooped up for so long writing an essay made me splurge my creativity into other things such as card making, and origami... in this instance I decided to surprise dear James when he returned home, I think he was pleasantly surprised :)

Origami paper is very fun indeed, so brightly coloured and versatile.
I think this is why I'm using it for my animation, which will be uploaded soon may I add, It's still very ropey however.. but It'll get an upload soon!

i love making things spur of the moment, I'm glad I've picked up this again.

Hello, It's been a while.
So I developed my initial storyboard forward.. I moved into psychedelics, experimenting with dye and food colouring.Then the effects that this would have on acetate when put into water. The initial development was more about experimenting with the medium as I felt I needed to be decisive about the imagery I used. I thought it was more important what "happened" to the imagery than what it actually was. The idea was to represent a "trip," and explore this journey, drawing upon experiences of others who have taken L.S.D.

I think the results were interesting. I did not expect them to dissolve.

I don't have my finals yet - eek.. expect them shortly. It involves projections.. projections which haven't happened yet. I hope it'll be alright on the night... !

I've totally destroyed the kitchen. Vegetable oil everywhere, but I'm happy I gave it a go. I'm trying to make psychadelic patterns, and i will succeed.. no matter how much vegetable oil and food colouring i use!

I had my interim Crit yesterday, I think it went well - I didn't like what I showed but I think it gives a good idea of where I'm heading :) I feel very inspired anyhow.

Can you tell what the narrative is from the picture? hmm I really hope so. or maybe I don't... maybe you should be confused? yes you should. :)

Superman..

1am is the best time to draw :)

I think I listened to "Waitin' for a superman," on loop while I drew this.
I'm trying to generate ideas for my new project which I'm doing on the Soft Bulletin album by the Flaming Lips. I figure by extensive listening, and text analysis I may get somewhere. I've got big ideas to do with 3D and paper :) I hope to be experimental.

I also visited the V&A yesterday.
I saw the Decode exhibition... http://www.vam.ac.uk/exhibitions/future_exhibs/Decode/ ...very good, I recommend! Many gadgets and intereactive pieces.

As well as Cicely Mary Barker's Flower Fairies - so beautiful. It was amazing to see them first hand. If only I could paint like that! <3

Don't I know you from somewhere?

This is my latest project. We were given a phrase and were then asked to develop practical work from it.

I found this interesting, especially looking into the condition Amnesia, and creating illustrations based around this.
I didn't want to lose the recognisation process of the phrase though. So as a result I created a catalogue of faces of people I knew, and people I did not know so well. In the final the faces are fazed out depending on how well i know them. So the bolder face the more I know the person in question.

A few of the developments are shown here, will try and upload the transparency piece too at some point.

Anorak Competition

The children's magazine Anorak recently posted a competition to create a cover design. I wanted an excuse to create something fun and child-like. So I went for it.. I could only find a handful of felt tips though. i think this probably helped my colour palette however.

Publishing Brief - Atwood Book Covers

I have been extremely busy and unable to update this, but I'm going to try my best to rectify this! I hope to use this blog as a tool, rather than a chore.. possibly why I haven't updated it in so long. But I understand it will become valuable to me in time.

So yes, I'm going to post what I did for my previous project at university.

It was a really odd brief, to create 5 covers for 5 of Margaret Atwood's books. There was a continuity factor that needed to be applied; so in essence all the book covers needed to look like they were part of a series.

This was a lot of work. Much more than I imagined, but I really enjoy working with paper. Paper is so much fun!

Especially creating 3D environments with them. I feel that they are far more captivating due to the lighting and the way that the shadows add depth.

Hello,
I'm so confused right now with this whole blogging concept.. I blame ang! but the lure of creating a url with octopus love child was too compelling.
aah, I hope to fill this page with illustrations. I think deviantart may have had its day now :/

I had an interesting train journey of four hours today, the usual Bournemouth to Stourbridge run was somewhat absent of happenings, but i still tried to take what i could from it, i managed to sketch anxious people on platforms, at least i think the guy in the mackintosh was anxious?

Who knows, It's nice to be home :) x
